History of Friends of Havant Cemetery
In 2010/11 Councillor Ralph Cousins approached Havant Borough Council on behalf of local residents and suggested volunteers could look after New Lane Cemetery, parts of which had become neglected. The Council contacted The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) and asked if they could help to establish a volunteer group. TCV applied for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which was successful, and the Havant Cemeteries Project began in June 2012. Fifty volunteers were involved through the practical conservation sessions, the programme of workshops, wildlife surveys and creating the exhibition, equating to over 1,500 hours of time.
The Friends of Havant Cemeteries was formed to take over when the Project ended in August 2014. We are a conservation group with no affiliation to any religious organisations. The Group aims to conserve, enhance and discover the natural and social history contained within the 3 Havant borough cemeteries located in New Lane , specifically St Faith’s, New Lane and the Dissenters. The Group provides opportunities to become involved in practical conservation volunteering and social history research. We continue to be supported by TCV who organise the Havant Conservation Forum and we work closely with Havant Borough Council.
If you would like to get involved, we meet on the last Tuesday of each month from 10am until 12.00. Please use the contact form below if you require more information.
