Last November a gate pillar at the entrance to the Council cemetery in New Road was damaged by a lorry and the entrance has been closed to vehicular traffic since. This week work started on repairing the gate pillar. The work is expected to take two weeks and will include refurbishment of the gates.
Yesterday we were informed that the northernmost gate pillar at the entrance to the Dissenters’ cemetery has also been damaged by a lorry. One of the gates had been stolen and our recent lottery award allows for replacement gates for the Dissenters’ cemetery. It does not, however, allow for rebuilding the gate pillar.
The damage is more extensive than initially thought, but the good news is that the wall of the Dissenters’ Cemetery is covered by insurance, so installation of the new gates should not be seriously delayed.
